The book details how the growth and development of social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, and Instagram have influenced how people interact with one another, receive news, and form social bonds. It introduces students to theories used to study social media, legal and ethical considerations for corporations and individual users, and examples of successful and unsuccessful social media usage to demonstrate its power and reach.
Dr. Nee developed JMS 210, Social Media in the Digital Age for San Diego State’s School of Journalism and Media Studies in 2012. The course is taught each fall and spring semester as a M/W lecture and alternate Friday discussion (hybrid). JMS 210 is also taught as a fully online course during the summer session.
JMS 210 is required of all Journalism & Media Studies majors and pre-majors. Students from all disciplines may take the course, however, as it is one of nine courses offered in the General Education area of Foundations.
The emphasis of this course is on effectively and ethically creating and consuming information via social networks in an increasingly connected and rapidly changing global environment. To further the understanding of the content, this course will heavily utilize Blackboard assignments, wikis, and journals; and, other forms of digital technology and social media. The class is divided into three modules: 1) Theories and historical formation of social media and social networks; 2) Ethical and legal issues in social media use; 3) Creating communities and professional uses of social media for mass communication.
